چکیده
We present four patients from South Africa with meningitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii, serotype C. These are the first patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection to be reported with serotype C meningitis.

HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis.
While the incidence of cryptococccal meningitis in the developed world has declined with widespread, early antiretroviral therapy (ART), cryptococcal disease remains a major opportunistic infection and leading cause of mortality in patients infected with HIV in much of the developing world. Most HIV-related cases are caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii (serotype A), while var. neoform...
متن کاملPopulation Genetic Analyses Reveal the African Origin and Strain Variation of Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii
Cryptococcus neoformans is a ubiquitous, saprobic yeast and the cause of life-threatening infections. Humans acquire the infection by inhaling airborne cells from the environment. In the lungs, these cells become encapsulated yeasts and proliferate. In people with healthy immune responses, the infection may resolve or remain latent and subsequently cause disease. However, in immunocompromised p...

Cryptococcus meningitis is the most severe form of cryptococcal infections that infects the brain parenchyma and sub-arachnoid space. It often progresses to fatal disease states when it goes untreated. The clinical presentation and disease course of cryptococcal infection is partially marked by changes that occur as a result of certain medical conditions including, use of glucocorticoids or oth...
متن کاملCryptococcus neoformans var. gattii meningitis in Egypt: a case report.
Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast ubiquitous in nature which, when it infects humans, typically causes pulmonary disease and occasionally meningitis [1]. Serotyping of the organism has identified 3 main varieties: C. neoformans var. grubii (serotype A), C. neoformans var. neoformans (serotype D) and C. neoformans var. gattii (serotypes B and C) [2]. Serotypes A and D have been is...
متن کاملMultilocus sequence typing of serially collected isolates of Cryptococcus from HIV-infected patients in South Africa.
Patients with cryptococcal meningitis in sub-Saharan Africa frequently relapse following treatment. The natural history and etiology of these recurrent episodes warrant investigation. Here, we used multilocus sequence typing (MLST) to compare the molecular genotypes of strains of Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii isolated from serial episodes of cryptococcal meningitis that were s...
